IN09 - Debate the Future of Interactive Media in Canada

2009-03-10

March 10, 09

Will the new Canada Media Fund mean more money for interactive media producers? Will the CRTC try to regulate the internet? Will next generation media entrepreneurs get the support to help them compete in the international marketplace?

Join us at IN09 for a two-part debate on the future of the medium.

Future of the Medium Part One - Asking the Right Questions

The CRTC is in the process of determining whether the definitions and rules set up in the Broadcasting Act, last revised in 1991, apply to content and services in the 'New Media'. Their mandate, to protect the nationalized Canadian broadcasting system, could have many repercussions for how content on interactive platforms is funded and distributed in Canada in the future.

But are they asking the right questions? Is the commission properly equipped to create regulation for the Internet? If so, what kind? If not, who should be charged with creating a plan to ensure Canadian products and services can compete in the highly competitive global marketplace?

Future of the Medium Part Two - The New Rules

Canadians are sometimes divided about the role of the state in the funding of media content and services. We do know however, that creative industries have become a large and growing economic engine. Most governments, especially in the prevailing economic conditions, recognize the value of job creation and investment.

We are already the 3rd largest developer of video games in the world. Yet it is still extremely difficult for interactive media companies to access the capital they need to grow in Canada. So as the manufacturing sector melts away, is this a new area for potential growth? Or are we too late?
